Man pleads guilty to attempted robbery of Arsenal duo Mesut Ozil and Sead Kolasinac

A man has pleaded guilty to the attempted robbery of two Arsenal footballers in north London.

Ashley Smith, 30, admitted to trying to steal watches from Mesut Ozil and Sead Kolasinac in Platts Lane, Hampstead, on July 25.

Footage on social media showed Kolasinac chasing off two knife-wielding attackers, who were wearing helmets and driving mopeds.

Ozil was in his black Mercedes G jeep before he reportedly abandoned the vehicle and ran off to take refuge in a local Turkish restaurant.

On Thursday, Smith appeared at Snaresbrook Crown Court via video link and pleaded guilty to attempting to ambush Ozil and Kolasinac.

Smith, along with Jordan Northover, 26, was charged over the incident last month.

Northover is set to appear before magistrates on Friday.

Both Ozil and Kolasinac were left out of the Arsenal squad which faced Lyon in a pre-season friendly following the incident.

However, both players have since returned to action for the Gunners during the 2019/20 campaign.
